Revitalizing a Cultural Icon

Located on the corner of East 125th St 5th Ave. the National Black Theatre has been a significant cultural and educational fixture in Harlem for over 50 years. This project will revitalize the theatre by constructing a new 21-story mixed residential-commercial-community building, raising the National Black Theatre to new heights in its role as a cultural beacon.

GEODesign provided all geotechnical and support of excavation (SOE) design and construction related services for the project.  This initially included performing test borings and test pits to obtain critical information about soil, rock, and adjacent foundation conditions.  We designed a foundation system of rock-socketed caissons and continuous flight auger-cast (CFA) piles bearing on bedrock. The designed SOE system included cantilevered soldier piles and soil-cement mixed walls below the groundwater.
