The Marina Pier, located in Jersey City, New Jersey, is approximately 570 feet long and 80 feet wide, and is supported on a timber platform supported on timber piles. Inspections indicated that the perimeter timber piles were damaged by marine borers. Some concrete seawall locations were experiencing significant movements and were on the verge of collapsing into the harbor.
The Solutions Unearthed
- GEODesign evaluated the existing conditions and it was decided that the timber piles around the pier perimeter were severely damaged.
- GEODesign quickly designed a stabilization system that included installing anchors into the concrete seawall, connecting the anchors to steel C channels, and connecting the channels to steel H piles installed in front of the concrete blocks.
- Provide design support services during construction, including recommending lightly loaded drilling equipment that could install the anchors and an alternate solution that used grouted anchors where through-bolting could not be performed.
