This design-build project required the construction of a new center pier and abutments with excavation depths up to 36 feet. GEODesign was retained to provide value engineering services related to the support of excavation systems. The contract documents included some abutment tiebacks that could not be installed and others that would be extremely difficult to install because of very limited site conditions and active roadway traffic.
The Solutions Unearthed
- GEODesign developed a unique design that replaced the abutment tiebacks with anchor piles driven behind the abutment soldier piles and attached to each other with high strength tierods.
- During construction, it was observed that a critical span located directly next to active LIRR tracks was much larger than the contract documents indicated. GEODesign acted quickly and provided the contractor with a unique waler and steel plate support system that allowed construction to continue without delay.
