GEODesign was retained to design and provide construction support services for the temporary Support of Excavation (SOE) for a 17-foot-deep excavation in Midtown Manhattan. The new 9-story building contains offices for the New York City Transit Authority (MTA) and over 100 affordable housing units. Various adjacent buildings, including one owned by the MTA, and unanticipated underground site conditions required close coordination between GEODesign and the rest of the design team throughout the design and construction phases of the project.
The Solutions Unearthed
- Designed an SOE system consisting of drilled soldier piles, rakers, tiebacks, and underpinning of adjacent buildings.
- An adjacent building owned by the MTA required thoughtful planning to avoid impacts to the building during construction. This required GEODesign to obtain MTA approval of the SOE drawings.
GEODesign worked closely with the contractor to address unanticipated underground conditions that were encountered during the excavation phase. This involved performing site visits, preparing sketches, updating the SOE drawings, and obtaining agency approvals with short turnaround times to keep the project moving.
