We provided geotechnical engineering, support of excavation (SOE) design and construction inspection services. The building is supported on 650-ton, 16-inch diameter, caissons that are socketed into Manhattan Schist bedrock. The complicated SOE for the two cellar levels included drilled soldier piles and an internal bracing system that resisted lateral loads from the adjacent MTA subway structure.
The Solutions Unearthed
- We evaluated the subsurface conditions at the site and provided design of 16-inch diameter, 650-ton caissons. Caissons were socketed into competent Manhattan Schist, located at depths up to 100 feet.
- We designed a deep and complex support of excavation system with two levels of rakers adjacent to a subway tunnel.
- We provided SOE and caisson inspection and addressed unforeseen conditions during construction.
