GEODesign provided geotechnical engineering design and construction phase services for the renovation and vertical expansion of two existing buildings. Due to the “7” subway tunnel running below East 42nd Street, permission to perform the borings and test pits inside of the buildings was obtained from the MTA. GEODesign prepared geotechnical reports and provided recommendations for supporting the new, expanded foundations on bedrock and provided a rock anchor design which was required to resist the significant added wind loads. GEODesign also filed the structural and foundation drawings with the MTA, and was retained to perform subgrade and rock anchor special inspections.
The Solutions Unearthed
- GEODesign developed a subsurface investigation program that included performing 9 test borings and 2 test pits in the cellars of the existing buildings.
- Recommended that the expanded footings be supported on the shallow bedrock, with an allowable bearing capacity of 40 tons per square foot.
- Provided rock anchor recommendations which included a range of capacities, and provided design drawings for a 550 kip rock anchor.
GEODesign was retained to perform subgrade and rock anchor inspections.
