Q BRIDGE REPLACEMENT

WHAT YOU DON’T SEE MATTERS

Serving as a centerpiece of the $2 billion New Haven Harbor Crossing Improvement Program, the new $554 million Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge replaced the former Q Bridge that had been in service for nearly 50 years. An extradosed bridge, this nearly one mile long span of I-95 over the Quinnipiac River is the first of its kind to open in the U.S. Our role on this project was ensuring that all the components you don’t see support everything you do. As geotechnical consultant for the project we recommended and designed the high capacity large diameter drilled shaft foundations for the main span of the bridge. Some of these shafts were drilled to depths of over 200 feet.

Q BRIDGE REPLACEMENT

Serving as the geotechnical consultant, we developed the subsurface exploration program for the project, which included over 180 borings that explored to 200 feet deep. Geotechnical analyses included seismic evaluations, soil liquefaction, development and evaluation of design phase pile load test program, and comprehensive soil/structure modeling of rock-socketed drilled shaft foundations. Challenges included soft soil conditions, environmental concerns and a tight schedule.
